I concur with this article by Claire Dwyer. We offer brief meetings for prayer and direction on our retreats, but my experience is that sometimes people come with a major decision or a personal crisis, and a short retreat meeting, while it still can be helpful to not ‘go off the rails’, is usually not sufficient to solve a major, burning problem. Rather read how Fr. Jeremiah Shryock, CFR offers two questions to ask yourself and talk about in such a meeting. Fr. James Brent, O.P. asks some similar questions. Spiritual Direction (whether one-time or regular) will be more productive as you become more aware of any trends or movements of the Holy Spirit unfolding in your life.
God bless, Fr. Gary Coulter
